Do you know that far less than 20% of the children that are eligible for free and reduced lunches in Texas continue to receive food when school is out? Are you or your congregation able to help provide volunteers in your local community? Or are you a summer feeding site that is in need of volunteers? As the summer rolls around, Texas Impact will be posting opportunities for people to volunteer with the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). This opportunity will allow volunteers to see what the program is all about while making a difference.
If you are in the Austin area, you may be interested in helping the Summer Feeding Service Program of Urban Connection Austin (UCA).
This year, UCA is expanding the reach of this program beyond the established sites in the city, by providing a mobile feeding program and taking food directly to the apartments, complexes and neighborhoods where there are large numbers of eligible kids live. UCA is helping to fill some of the gaps in the Summer Food Service Program in Austin with a mobile food delivery program.
UCA delivers lunches to four sites within a mile radius of Rundberg Lane and IH-35. Three to four volunteers are needed at each site to meet the mobile delivery unit and will spend one hour helping them distribute these lunches and working with the kids. Volunteers do not need previous experience and training is provided. Volunteers will spend approximately one hour helping to distribute lunches and working with the children at each site. Volunteers are still needed for the following dates:
- Fridays, June 18th - July 30th
- Tuesday, July 6th - Thursday, July 8th
- Monday, August 2nd - Friday, August 14th
